There is a wintry chill in the air that whispers … “60% off”… can you hear it? Okay maybe if you’re in Australia it’s a warm breeze.
Either way, the season during which we can truly differentiate ourselves as handmade sellers is here. The holidays are a huge time for retailers of all sizes, but the way each behaves should often times be very different.
Big business can teach us a lot. They have invested more money and time into researching consumer behavior, so we can piggy back off them in some ways at some times. But not always. Remember they are operating with massive resources of time, money and person-power. You are likely a very small operation. Beyond the fact that you are different from these big box stores in terms of size and sheer flume-ability, you are also a sought after experience. Do not forget this: people ENJOY shopping small for lots of different reasons. Don’t try so hard to be something you aren’t – you might lose track of what people love about you! (That’s a proverb waiting to happen right there.)
