We have all been there: taking pictures of our wares, struggling to keep it standing, not rolling, not looking dismal…trying to figure out how to show something off, and give it scale and not have it get lost in the photo… and so on and so on… sigh. You know how it is.
Especially for little things, like earrings, and buttons and bobby pins.
Then there is always the awkward item, or wearable and well, no one to wear it and no body form and it’s just, let’s say, a bad hair day or some other inconvenience which doesn’t exactly prompt you to set up the self timer.
Or perhaps you are straight up bored of your usual approach.
If you’ve seen my shop you know I am a fan of the basic white background, but I have found some creative solutions and props for product photos I’d like to share. These sellers are truly using their right brain when composing these photos. Let’s take a look shall we?
Possible issue: you are selling an article of clothing. No model available today, you aren’t feeling much like being in the spotlight, no mannequin, item is not your size.
Solution: Put it on a hanger. It’s not boring. Don’t believe me?…

By using other simple, non competing items that are traditionally associated with clothing, clothespins, line and a hanger, this item stands out and is shown off nicely. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Believe me yet?
Now, this is a good lead in to our next example. Take that same clothespin, and use it to hold a ring. When i saw this for the first time, I was impressed. So simple! So easy! Looks so good! No hand model needed!

Now this is one of my favorite creative solutions! This is so clever, I almost can’t stand it. And what a lovely item it’s lending a hand to. I’ve seen fruit used as props in… fruit bowls and fruit themed items, but this… this I have not seen, and this I like… a lot.

And this is another that is truly fabulous. Maybe I have a thing for paintbrushes. I don’t paint, but i am drawn to them for some reason. And here is a creative use for one, for all the times it isn’t busy being used for it’s original purpose…

All of these props offer solutions to the following issues:
addressing scale of an item
stabilizing the item while taking the photo
offering some interest, but not taking the attention away from what we are supposed to be looking at
and finally, help with the composition of the photo
Maybe you’ve tried some interesting props before. Did they work? What did you try? Maybe you are now full of ideas and inspirations and want me to stop blabbing do you can go try something new out? Okay. I can do that for you. Good luck out there!
