Exciting News

I haven’t looked at my Google Analytics in months, literally, months! I’ve been relying pretty heavily on the Etsy shop stats recently, which are great by the way.

And I looked today because I was curious and I am flabbergasted by this fact:

Between October 1 and october 31, 2011, my etsy shop was viewed by…

3,990 Absolute Unique Visitors.

And 103 countries!

WHAT THE WHAT?!

This made me pretty happy.

More fun facts from this little adventure into the GA Vault:

17% of my traffic came between 12:00 and 1:00.

Illinois is slowly creeping up the ladder of states from which I get the most traffic.

Super yay!

How I Got Featured in BHG

Lots of people have been asking how I got my necklace published in Better Homes and Gardens and so I thought writing a post would be the best way to give you the whole story.

So in case you were wondering…

Back in July, I was on a little family vacation out in the boonies (not really, but it felt that way since I am so used to city livin’) somewhat removed from society and I got an Etsy convo from Mary Andrews (merchandising admin at Etsy) and she asked if I would be interested in submitting some necklaces to “potentially” be featured in the november issue of BHG for the story “simply handmade.”

OMG OMG OMG! Me?! NO WAY?!” I shouted.

Of course they needed me to send the stuff out the next day in order for it to be there in time…

OH THE STRESS!” I shouted.

But, oh yeah duh, I never leave my box of threads home, and just by chance I happened to have a few pendants with me.

I CAN! I CAN! Of course I want to! Sign me up, Mary!” I shouted.

So I wrote back a big fat HECK YEAH and she put me in contact with the editor for the story. We went back and fourth a few times and she told me exactly what they wanted and sent me a color chart so I could match colors for the spread.

OH MY GOODNESS I CAN’T BELIEVE I ACTUALLY HAVE THESE COLORS OF FABRIC WITH ME!” I shouted.

So far, so good. I knew I could at least accomplish making the pendants.

QUICK! DAD! HELP!” I shouted. “I NEED A CHAIN TO PUT THESE ON!

And so we went off in search of a jewerly store. $30 later, chain obtained.

BUT I HAVE NO BUSINESS CARDS OR PRINTER TO WRITE OUT A LETTER!” I shouted.

I emptied out my suitcase and my bag and all my pockets and my mom’s wallet and my mom’s bag and any other place a Merriweather business card might be hiding and found one! One! That’s all I needed.

Sat down and hand wrote a little letter and all the info they requested and DIYed a somewhat cute wrap job with the limited materials I had and sighed in relief.

BUT DAD! HOW WILL I SHIP IT THERE IN TIME!” I shouted.

And so we went off in search of a FedEx store. No FedEx store for hours.

WHAT ABOUT UPS!” I shouted.

UPS had a location closer to us! Score city!

OMG I CAN’T BELIEVE I AM SENDING THINGS TO BHG!” I shouted.

$29 later, necklaces and handwritten info are on their way to BHG and we went back to the beach.

Smiles all around.

But, at this point it was still just a “potential” feature. A few weeks later, I realized I would need to stock up on supplies *fingers crossed* if the necklaces made the cut, so I wrote to the editor  and she said I was in!! Yippee!!

A couple weeks after that, they sent me a proof of the spread so I could see it all and it looked so pretty!

And the rest is history! My necklaces returned back to be safely and the feature was published. I’m so thrilled and thankful that my creations are featured in a magazine that people I know are subscribed to! A magazine that my mom used to give me to cut up (after she read it all of course!) to use for decoupage when I was younger. Crazytown. Still pretty amazed actually.

So crazy.

Big sigh of relief.

Rise and Shine

I’m so excited to be bringing you  an introduction and oh so very special giveaway of this wonderful new Ebook by Allisa Jacobs! Allisa is a super uber talented maker of bags of all kinds and has developed her handmade business of the past few years and in that time she has learned a ton and wants to help others who are embarking on the same adventure.

Allisa has brought a number of contributors (I am so delighted to be one!) and her own experience and knowledge together to bring handmakers and creative entrepreneurs a new ebook focused on “empowering creative people to find their own authentic path in the world.”

One of Allisa’s lovely clutches.

And I can assure you it is a new, fresh take on the topic of handmade business building!

In her own words, here is a bit about who the book is for and what it offers:

This book is intended for those looking to start a brand new online shop and for those who have already taken the leap but need a bit of a jumpstart. It’s chock full of tips and inside bits Ilearned the hard way. Plus I’ve included pearls of wisdom from online superstars and industry experts in sections I call “shops (or sites) that shine”. I avoid generic how-to tips (I figure you know how to insert photos and determine shipping information, for example) and instead offer a discussion to motivate, inspire, and ignite the spark for creative business.

Allisa covers topics including defining your concept, setting realistic expectations, wholesale and consignment, bookkeeping, the attributes of worth and pricing products, marketing, craft shows and defining goals and lots more. The book is nearly 60 pages long and features contributions from 9 other artists and designers.

If you are looking for a cohesive, insightful and well written guide to finding your spark and making your place in the online worl truly unique – then you will want to give this little gem a read. This book has some great insight, tips and stories that I believe will help creative entrepreneurs whether they are just starting out or have been in business for a while – everyone can benefit from this!

Read Jessika’s post about Rise & Shine on Oh my handmade goodness!

Allisa has generously offered to give away one copy of the book to one of you lovely blog readers! What a doll! Thank you Allisa!

{If you don’t want to jump through any hoops and would prefer to just buy a copy for yourself, you can do so here for $10. A small but worthy investment, I assure you.)

If you would like to be in the running to win a copy of Allisa’s Ebook “rise and shine” please leave a comment (mandatory entry comment) and simply tell us what you’ve been struggling with the most in your business (I’m pretty sure whatever it is, Allisa covers it in the book!) Please also visit Allisa’s shop and blog! Bonus entries if you follow become a follower of Allisa’s blog and leave a comment with your Google friend connect name/ follow Allisa on Twitter and leave a comment with your @name / and Tweet about this giveaway using the tweet button on this post and leave a link to your tweet as a comment.

I’m Still Alive and other True Stories

Hello! I am still alive! I’ve just been really flipping busy! And busy leads to tired. So I’ve been busy and also tired. I’m okay with that though – and I’m not complaining, just explaining why I’ve not been ’round these parts.

(I promised other true stories, this is one ^)

This is also my attempt to appeal to state lovering jewelry wearers without truckin’ down the same old road.

Coming soon.

Here is what’s happened since we last spoke:

1. Went to DC for Crafty Bastards (it was awesome)

2. Went back to Long Island for a couple days. Not long enough, right, I know.

3. Did a lot of impressions of Dr. Phil and Long Island moms. That’s what happens when I reach the mothership.

4. Went to Providence.

5. Came back to Boston.

6. Faced epic pile of work to do.

7. Still working on bringing the epic pile down to more manageable levels.

8. Wrote this post.

Next week I have something super special for you though so you should come back then. Especially if you are a creative business councilor like I am.

Have a fancy pants weekend friends! If you are in Boston – come see me at SOWA on sunday!

What I Learned This Weekend

source

This weekend, whilst working of course, I had Titanic on repeat in the background. I don’t own Titanic, never have, probably never will, but it was on TV … over and over and over. And so I watched.

Now, I’m going to assume you all know the basics of the movie and forgo giving you a synopsis.

Probably everyone has seen Titanic at least once. Many of us have seen it multiple times. But something interesting happens when you watch a movie over and over – you start to notice all the stuff that’s not quite right about it.

There are a ton of errors in Titanic, as I’m sure there are in many movies. But not all movies have gross earnings of over $1 billion dollars, do they?

So here’s what I learned this weekend:

Whatever you’re doing doesn’t have to be perfect. It does, however, need to be intriguing, original, interesting, and envelop pushing in someway.

People didn’t watch Titanic to find out what happened to a boat – everyone always knows the boat sinks.

People didn’t care that there were errors in the movie – they were paying attention to everything else – which was so well done – that it made up for the parts that were lacking. None of these lacking parts are, by the way, obvious. They sort of slip by. They aren’t apparent until you sit there and watch the same thing over and over.

So, I’ll do as Titanic did. I’ll do it as best as I possibly can, and be okay with a couple continuity errors because – stuff is gunna slip while I’m focusing on something else – something more important.  I’m pretty sure the good people behind the scenes at Titanic were more concerned with the historical accuracy of the costumes the entire cast and not so much what lake Jack went fishing on as a child. You think?

The point is, the tiny little things that were wrong with the movie – did not change the way people felt about the movie. The overall experience was great – and the movie made an eff ton of money. So, that’s that.

And honestly, if a movie as huge of a deal with as gigantic of a budget as Titanic has errors – probably most things will.

*disclaimer: this doesn’t mean I am going to slack off, nor does it mean I think you should.

The Manifesto of Mother Merri

Manifesto –  a written statement declaring publicly the intentions, motives or views of its issuer.

(source)

“The Articles of Merriment.”

a declaration by me, Danielle.

a genuinely self deprecating photo of me. But if you look closely, there is lots of subtle symbolism.

I believe that all colors have the potential to be beautiful. When paired or grouped properly, colors that we might disregard as boring or dull can shimmer, shine, glow, effervesce or otherwise gleam their beauty. Colors work together to push and pull their neighbors’ highs, lows, brights and dulls. Even within one shade of a color – there are other colors, if you really look closely, working together to bring you that one shade. Colors do not stand alone.

Attention to detail is important to me- very important- and there is a fine line between “handmade” and “messy.” I want to maintain the handmade feel of my work – because it is – but I also want it to be manicured and well made. I’ve been paying more attention to the underside (aka back) or things, and the parts that maybe you don’t see unless you go looking for it.

Small victories shouldn’t be taken for granted. I like to think that big things are just little things standing on each other’s shoulders. You have to get to points 1, 2 and 3 before you can get to point 19. I was once asked, “if you had more time…” it’s not about having the time, it’s about doing things at the right time. Could I be doing more? Probably, but I need to do what I am doing now, and do it well, and then move on to the next thing. It’s important not to rush through things, but it’s also important to not be lazy. I don’t want to give myself too much cushion. Again, fine line.

Karma: What goes around comes around.

I take advice from the people who are on a level I want to be on. Sometimes that means business related level and sometimes that means state of mind, attitude or some other such thing. The person who I want business advice from might not be the person whose morals I value… but it might be ;)

Bad experiences are only bad if you didn’t get anything out of it. Sit all day at a show, don’t sell a thing? Bad. Concocted new game plan for next show – okay, worth it. Milk it.

Being shy never got anyone any place. I think Madonna said it best – you can’t get what you want unless you ask for it. Additionally, I like to embrace my oddities. I’m not that odd, but I’ve done some downright silly things, and thought some silly things… hey, whatever.

I have to be my own biggest fan – because I am the only one who is around all the time. I am the only one who is gunna deal with me and my dumb insecurities while I lay awake doubting myself at 4 am. (Don’t get me wrong – of course if stress level reaches code dark orange or red, I’m on the phone with mom.) Also because the little voice inside my head is my own, even when it’s mean and intimidating, it’s mine and I have to deal with that.

I say yes often but I say no when I really can’t, really don’t want to, or really don’t know how to. For the first year of Merriment, I made it a point to say yes to just about everything. This turned out to be a wonderful thing for me.

Teach class at Etsy labs? Sure!

Wanna come to this meeting? Of course I do!

Can I put this on my blog? Absolutely.

I have to stay aware of the amount of things I say yes to – because I still have to feed, dress, bathe and rest myself. And I want my customers to only get the best stuff from me. Which leads me to my next point…

I do creative work only when I feel like it. If I force it – it turns out ugly and I just wasted my time. There have been times I make something that I don’t love, but that I like – and I’ll list it anyway – and someone else loves it. There have also been times I listed something I really didn’t feel confident in – and I think people can tell-  because that stuff is the stuff that doesn’t sell right away or at all. You know of these things… I’m sure you do. No more. From now on, it it doesn’t feel right, it’s out.

I figure I may as well lose sleep, eat mexican food 7 meals in a row and work my tail feather off now… while I’m young… or, like, whatever…

I like to lend a hand to the little guy – I’m not much bigger.

Sarcasm is key to understanding the things I write here on my bloggity blog. But for the most part, today I am being serious. You know, like, as serious as I know how to be, like, or like… you know.

I like to stick to what I know, but I also like to go out on a limb. I also like to remember that I only got to where I am because of all the other stuff that’s happened to me. Shitty teachers, really awesome teachers, Girl Scout Troops, Smithtown, my parents… the music video for I Want It That Way… you get the idea.

Sometimes I let myself get upset about stuff. And sometimes I don’t. Both of those are important.

Criticism? That’s cool… just be polite about it. Disrespect is unappreciated by pretty much everyone.

Ultimately, I get to decide what happens to Merriweather Council, but I’ve got a core group of people I like to conference with first. Sometimes it takes me a while to decide on stuff… like, whatever.

I like to tap into my inner Gaga occasionally… you know, when it’s appropriate, and sometimes when it’s not, and always just a little bit. Kinda like right now… if you know what I’m talking about, thumbs up. What do I mean by this, this Gaga tapping – that girl knows what’s up. Do i think we should all start wearing raw meat? No, not really… in fact, I definitely don’t. But do I think we should all accept each other and ourselves for what we are/ what we were born with? Yeah, I definitely do. Do I think that if you’re brave enough to do something different that you should? Absolutely. Do I admire originality? HECK. YES. Which leads me to my next point…

I strive to be original. I think everyone should. I won’t address plagiarism and copycatness in my manifesto. But I will say: that shit sucks. Take a queue from someone you admire, but don’t take their whole bushel of apples…. or cantaloupe or whatever fruit you like best.

Merriweather Council is important to me – super important – and I want it to be bigger and better every year – but I don’t want it to be more important that the other important things. I want all the important stuff to work together, not against each other, but for each other. Like, together. Like, that’s what I said. Like…

I have to be myself because I’m a shitty actress, I can’t lie to save my life and I just don’t know how to be anything else, so I’ll do me, you do you, and we can all live happily ever after. Sometimes being me includes stressing out, crying, dancing like a weirdo, thinking my hair looks dumb, snorting while I laugh,  seeing a therapist or being bitchy, not all of it is always pretty or wise or great but that’s who I am  … *shurg* (Like I said, I embrace…)

I believe I will update this from time to time and that this is just a first draft. It’s okay to revise even your own opinions.

I believe that what happens in diapers should stay in diapers.
