2014 was not the most remarkable or memorable year for Merriweather Council. I think it’s fair to say it didn’t stand much of a chance. It simply couldn’t be remarkable because of all the other stuff that was going on. And if i’m honest, I had no idea what to expect from this year so I didn’t set out with any definitive goals or plans – other than to survive it, which I did!
To be fair, 2014 was a very good year for me personally, which in many ways benefits me more and is more important. I wrote a bit about the year on my personal blog.
Now that we are settled in our new location, and now that I’ve gotten clearer about what I want my work life to look like, I can say that 2015 is a different story – and I do have some goals and plans in mind. (And by some, I mean, a whole lot.)
The past four and a half years have been really fun and fulfilling. But It’s boring to do the same exact thing over and over again. A lot of the things I’ll be doing in 2015 are things I wanted to do last year, but just did not have the space/ time/ capacity to make them happen. I used to muse about “scrapping the whole thing and starting over” – it’s a crazy dumb idea really, because I love what I do, but I do want to expand and reimagine it.
So to give 2015 the best possible start for the things I have in mind, here’s a quick list of what’s changing.
1. More writing
I’ve always enjoyed writing and for whatever reason, people have often told me I’m “good” at it. The truth is I know very little about the rules of writing and I swear on all things holy I simply did not learn grammar in school. I remember briefly discussing it in elementary school – for about an hour – and never again. So am I good at it? Not sure. But I do enjoy it very much. As I recently told you, I am planning on blogging here more – and if interested, you can follow along with my personal musings over at Four Years In.
2. Less hoops
This is probably the most obvious change I’ll be making. I very much love hoop making, but I’ve been doing it for quite a while, and that has begun to feel stagnant and boring. So I am going to cut back on them in order to explore other things. For my made to order hoops, I will take orders for them through Valentine’s day or until I run out of these size hoops – whichever comes first. I suspect it will be the latter, so please don’t delay in ordering if you’d like one.
2. I’ll be adding tea towels!
I’ve been wanting to add tea towels for a while, so – now’s good! I see these as little explorations and one of a kind pieces but I’ll also be taking custom orders on them. If you want to know when they are available, join my mailing list or subscribe to this blog via email (see sidebar, right) so you won’t miss the announcement.
3. Thrifted Stitches + TRL
Over the summer I became aware of and then, fascinated with all the fun, vintage, goofy textiles and needleworks I discovered while thrifting. I rarely ever bought them, just documented them in photos and enjoyed them – but I have been feeling the urge to resuscitate them. So, enter TRL = textile rescue league. I’ve been scooping them up now as I see them and I have plans to revitalize, refurb and reimagine them and then put them in my shop. I think this will be a fun way for me to work on creative projects without stitching and bring life back to old, discarded textile based objects. I am really looking forward to working with these pieces – they are all so unique and quirky!
4. Other Surprises!
I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, so I’ll cover the rest of the ideas with the umbrella of “other surprises” and leave room to evolve in these ideas. There are always things… always things…
Bonus: She Percolates
Not exactly in any way related to Merriweather Council but, worth noting. One of the reasons I am restructuring Merriweather Council is to allow myself the time to work on other projects! One of those projects is She Percolates! This is a joint venture with my friend Jen Hatzung and will consist of a podcast and a blog! We are really excited about it and I think we have something really special and unique here. You can learn more about She Percolates on our website and Instagram account.
I’m really excited to see what I can do when I give myself the chance. What are your plans for the new year in your creative business or in your life-at-large?
