One of my favorite custom projects that I recently completed was a set of custom hand embroidery Christmas stockings. The stockings were mailed to me already made, I believe they were purchased from Land of Nod and I stitched the names into them.
These stockings were extremely soft and durable – made of wool felt – and were so colorful and fun. There was a third stocking as well that featured a snowman and was primarily a blue background. I love it when Christmas decorations are a little bit traditional and a little bit modern, like these stockings. That is what I try to accomplish with my work as well, actually.
I always love doing custom projects for people because it gives me a chance – and let’s be honest, a reason – to do things I wouldn’t normally do. This is actually the second set of Christmas stockings I stitched this year. However, because I am an idiot, I did not get a photo of the first set before sending them back home.
For many years I had the same stocking that, although not handmade or personalized, was a Christmas tradition for me. Christmas is full of heirlooms and traditions and I hope that this family will enjoy many Christmas mornings puling goodies out of these.
I have to say that the idea of hanging socks near a fireplace is a bit strange at first though but it is one of the quintessential Christmas traditions and really, we all love a little bit of quirkiness. I did find this bit of legend about the tradition on wikipedia which gives it a bit of context. Either way, stockings are a fun tradition and I was happy to be invited to be a small part of this family’s Christmas
