It’s the beginning of June which means it’s the beginning of the slump season. It will probably happen to you and you will probably panic. But you shouldn’t.

Summer slump: real + largely unavoidable. Your sales probably aren’t going to come to a screeching halt, but they probably will slump. It’s okay.

It’s not just you, it’s not just small business. Most retailers see a lull during the summer.

People are spending money on experiences (vacations, ballgames, concerts), they are away from home or out of the house at all times of the day, kids are home from school, no gifting holidays for months… it just makes sense that sales slow down and there’s not a whole lot you can do to change the behaviors of a country’s worth of people.

If you want to get technical, all businesses have seasons. The people who sell tee shirts on the Jersey Shore all summer probably have their off season in the winter. Same with the hot dog vendors at Coney Island.

You aren’t a failure. But you’ll feel like one if you don’t know how to handle it. You will be an emotional roller coaster: slow sales, panic, I’m a failure, my business is a failure, let’s forget this ever happened. Then, BAM! Sales again, everything is great, oh wait, I’m not prepared, now want to explode from anxiety.

I want you to stop before the emotional rollercoaster rolls in and I want you to have positive focus this summer.

You have two choices.

Choice A: Gight a losing battle trying to increase revenue.

Choice B: Spend your energy instead on plotting, planning and positioning for the following season.

I promote choice B!

Summer is awesome for making plans, progress and advancements. This is a very valuable time in the year for you as a business owner.

Your summer goal should not be based on increasing sales, rather maintaining momentum, and preparing for the busier times of year.

Summer goals:

  • Maintain momentum
  • Prep for the holidays
  • Take a couple of damn days off
  • Build your list
  • Your goal is not to INCREASE sales necessarily. Your goal is to maintain momentum DESPITE sales being slow.

Summer slump might be real, but it’s not going to wring you dry this year. Nope, not you – not this year.
